Space Hunter Alpha

This was a challenge to make mobile game.  I don't remember if it had to be an action game or not.  The professor extended the challenge to try and make a full game concept to all those who would like to try it.  I accepted that challenge.

Concept:

In a distant part of space, a war wages between two galaxies. The Omega galaxy is defending itself from the tyrannical Emperor Fediss. Fediss has gained control over his Olarchian galaxy and is now working to expand his empire. To bad for him, the Omega galaxy is full of strong willed warrior races. The Omega galaxy also cannot stop Fediss's constant invasions. A single elite warrior has been sent into the Olarchian galaxy to try and halt Fediss's forces from invading any further, from the inside.

You, the player, will assume the roll of Trent Craig. A talented human warrior with amazing combat abilities. You will travel to each of the six planets in your ship and take out Emperor Fediss's generals and the emperor himself. There will be many types of enemies to do battle with along the ways, from giant bug looking monsters, to soldiers that look just like you. You will be required to fight on your toes. Be agile and shoot with precision.

The worlds will each have a unique theme to them. The themes will be: heavy vegetation, desert wasteland, submerged in water, and more. After the player has been victorious in defeating all the generals, Trent will travel to the home planet of Fediss and defeat him once and for all.

Mechanics:

You will choose whichever planet to travel to. You will fly your ship into the planets atmosphere, but will be welcomed by Fediss's fleets. The battles will feel like an arcade style side scrolling shooter like Gradius where you move your ship and shoot forward. However, you will be able to turn your ship the other way making the game will feel more like Defender II on the NES, or the classic arcade shooter, Fantasy Zone. Like those two titles, you will need to eradicate enemy ships so that you can safely land your ship to further hunt down the generals.

The way this section is controlled is that the player will have two fire buttons at the lower corners of the screen. Holding the device horizontally, you will shoot any enemies that come on screen. Where you touch the screen, the ship will go. Once the ship reaches your finger, or you lift it off the screen, the ship will stop moving in that direction. The ship will always move forward though. To turn to the left or right, you will need to double tap to the left or right of the ship. If you double tap in the direction the ship is facing, you will thrust forward for a short distance. The two fire buttons have the same firepower. This is because the direction control hand will change with what direction the ship is facing.

That is just the first part of the level. The second part will have you journey through a part of the planet on foot. These sections will be in buildings, underneath the planets surface, through water, and on land. This part will play like a platformer where you will be able to move, dash and shoot. There will be upgrades to your movement and firepower. These levels will have some sections that may not always be accessible with the current equipment that you have. These items may be found in other levels or other parts of the level. This will make the game feel more open-ended and will allow you the opportunity to explore. You will be able to return to your ship at anytime and journey to another planet.

To control Trent here you will either touch and hold the screen to his right, or to his left. It depends on which way you want him to go. There will be no way to jump, but there will be a way to dash. This dash can be used in any direction, including up. You will be able to dash three times in the air. Think of this as a triple jump. Dashing on the ground is endless. Shooting will happen when you touch an enemy that shows up on the screen. There will be a few virtual buttons on the screen. At the bottom right will be a menu button so that you can view your equipment and map. At the top, the life meter will be in the middle. To the left of that there will be a weapon selector. Here you can select your weapon by touching arrow buttons on the sides of the weapon icon. Like the space ship mode, this will also have the game displayed horizontally.

Because of the open-ended nature of this title, and being on a mobile platform, we realize that you might be playing this on the go. We understand that you may not have time to finish a level or even just reach a save point. So saving will be possible anywhere. It will be more of a save state feature, so when you resume the adventure you will start at the very point you left off from.

Audio:

This game will have a 16-bit feel to it, so the audio will feature midi-like audio that was found on the Super Nintendo. The tunes will vary between fast beat tunes for enemy engagement, to eerie slow songs for some exploration. The music will change to the fast paced when enemies appear. There will be some sections of levels where these themes stick. Like if you are invading a heavily fortified part of the level, the music will remain fast paced until you finish that section. Bosses will fit into that category too. The sound effects will be that of lasers, rockets, and monsters roaring.

Graphics:

Again, this game will have a 16-bit feel. The character and enemy sprites will have the look of Super Nintendo action/platformers. Lighting will vary with the theme of the section of the level. The theme of the game will feel somewhat serious, but there will be some areas with bright colors. Like when going to the planet with heavy forests, the trees will display a bright and rich green. There will be some cinematic scenes where 2D moving figures will be shown conversing with each other like the cinematic scenes found in the NES Ninja Gaiden games.

Fun Factor:

There are not many traditional console games found on mobile devices. Few are made from the ground up for them though. Here is a full game with exploration made for mobile devices. The saving will make it so that anybody can play this game at anytime without worrying about replaying what they have already completed.

If you enjoy fast paced shooting and platforming, this will be the game to get. There are a few small mobile games that have the player touch enemies to attack them. Combine this with the ability to freely move in a large environment will be exhilarating. The combat will be fast and challenging too. Combine this with strategically switching weapons to gain the upper hand and we have an intense and intelligent combat system for a mobile game.

The two different action modes will give the players some variety. Sure they will know that each level has two modes of gameplay, but it will feel like they are playing two games in one. There will be an interesting variety of enemies so that the player doesn't always enter one planet expecting to already know what they will be facing
